Fashion News and Trends: Designers, Models, Style Guides
With blogging platforms such as Instagram, Tumblr, WordPress, Squarespace, and other sharing sites, bloggers have emerged as expert fashion commentators, shaping brands and having a great impact on what is ‘on trend’. Editorial critique, guidelines, and commentary can be found on television and in magazines, newspapers, fashion websites, social networks, and fashion blogs. In recent years, fashion blogging and YouTube videos have become a major outlet for spreading trends and fashion tips, creating an online culture of sharing one's style on a website or social media accounts (i.e. Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter). Through these media outlets, readers and viewers all over the world can learn about fashion, making it very accessible. In addition to fashion journalism, another media platform that is important in fashion industry is advertisement. Advertisements provide information to audiences and promote the sales of products and services.
But Dolce & Gabbana emerged mostly unscathed in the public eye and continues to enjoy positive associations with big celebrities like Kim Kardashian, who announced a collaboration with the brand in September. While Balenciaga is one of parent company Kering’s crown jewels, the Lawyer brand has been embattled recently. Other controversies within the last 12 months include selling a $2,000 pair of “destroyed” sneakers and a pair of boxers that were seen as cultural appropriation. But the publication stated on Instagram that it’s rescinding the offer.
The fallout began on Nov. 16, when Balenciaga published a campaign called Balenciaga Gift Shop, which featured images of children with the brand’s handbags that look like teddy bears in bondage gear. The luxury fashion house Balenciaga has apologised over adverts that showed children holding teddy bears in bondage gear and others featuring documents about child sexual abuse law as a prop. When taking an explicit political stance, designers generally favor issues that can be identified in clear language with virtuous undertones. Prabal Gurung debuted his collection of T-shirts featuring slogans such as "The Future is Female", "We Will Not Be Silenced", and "Nevertheless She Persisted", with proceeds going to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Gurung's own charity, "Shikshya Foundation Nepal". Similarly, The Business of Fashion launched the #TiedTogether movement on Social Media, encouraging member of the industry from editors to models, to wear a white bandana advocating for "unity, solidarity, and inclusiveness during fashion week".
Although Kering doesn’t break down the annual revenue for Balenciaga, HSBC estimates that the fashion house generated about 1.76 billion euros, or $1.81 billion, in sales in 2021. As of Monday, there were no plush bondage bear handbags for sale on Balenciaga’s website. However, there was a dog bowl with spikes for $848; a trio of Christmas tree ornaments, including a puffer jacket, a sneaker and a handbag for $740; and a candleholder shaped like an empty soda can for $625.
BoF said it would instead invite representatives from Balenciaga to attend the event as an opportunity to explain how this happened. The accusation was fuelled by the campaign for its Adidas collaboration featuring the case notes referring to "virtual child porn". As criticism Fashion built, a sarcastic tweet from YouTuber June Nicole Lapine gained a lot of traction and Balenciaga deleted all the images a short time later. They started to go viral, especially in the US among users who object to what they see as "over-sexualising" young children.
